Lead Enrichment Tools: How to Build an Enrichment Waterfall

No single data provider covers your whole list. A waterfall sequences several by cost and accuracy, and can lift match rates by 20–40 points.

Every enrichment provider claims high coverage, and every provider is right — for a slice of the market. Coverage varies wildly by geography, company size and seniority.

An enrichment waterfall accepts this and sequences providers so each record is tried against the cheapest source likely to have it, falling through to more expensive ones only when needed.

Reviewed by Mapdad’s procurement & data team. Pricing and plan details come from the offers we currently provision. Dataset figures come from the delivered exports themselves, not from vendor marketing. Pages are reviewed whenever offers, platform rules or delivery practices change.

Why single-provider enrichment underperforms

A provider strong on US mid-market tech will be weak on European iGaming operators or Gulf-region trading firms. If your ICP sits outside a provider's strongest segment, you may enrich only half your list and never learn that a second source had the rest.

Rules that keep a waterfall honest

  • Stop at the first verified result — do not pay two providers for the same record.
  • Record which source produced each field so you can score providers over time.
  • Verify at the end regardless of source; providers return stale addresses.
  • Re-enrich quarterly, not continuously — B2B data decays around 2–3% monthly.

Measure cost per verified contact, not per credit

A provider at half the credit price with a 30% match rate is more expensive than a premium source at 80%. Track: credits spent ÷ contacts that passed verification. That single number will usually reorder your waterfall within a month.

Start from a better base list

Enrichment quality is bounded by the input. A list of company names needs everything inferred; an event attendee list already carries name, company, title and a verified email, so enrichment only fills gaps such as phone or LinkedIn URL. Starting from verified event data typically cuts enrichment spend substantially.

Frequently asked questions

How many providers should a waterfall use?

Three to four tiers covers most cases. Beyond that, marginal coverage gains rarely justify the integration and reconciliation overhead.

Is enrichment GDPR compliant?

Enriching business contact data for B2B outreach can rely on legitimate interest in the EU and UK, provided you document the assessment, disclose the source on request and honour objections.

What match rate is realistic?

A well-built waterfall on a clean B2B input commonly lands in the 70–90% range for work email. Single-provider setups often sit far lower on non-US data.
